Louis Theroux Documentary on Brain Injury Survivors

In the recently released BBC documentary ‘A Different Brain’, Louis Theroux spends time with several brain injury survivors at different points during their rehabilitation journey.

Over the course of the documentary, Louis had the opportunity to meet with staff and patients at one of the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust centres. The documentary focuses not only on the on-going care that is required by those suffering from a brain injury but also the impact this can have on their family and friends.

We meet Dan, who was involved in a serious road traffic accident in 2006. He was hit by a moving vehicle causing serious physical injuries and significant brain injuries.

He said: “I was in hospital for a couple of years where I had a lot of operations and spent a lot of time in a coma. When I woke up, I had to walk, talk, read and write and do everything for myself again. They told me I would never walk again, but look at me now!”

The documentary highlights the issues that affect the one million people in the UK that are living with the long-term effects of a brain injury. Winn Solicitors has a specialist team of serious injury solicitors on-hand to ensure that those suffering from a brain injury receive the on-going care and support they need, at no upfront cost.

We understand that brain injury cases need to be handled with care and expertise. Those featured in of Louis Theroux’s documentary allowed us to better understand some of the types of on-going support that survivors of brain injuries may require following their accident. Not only do we work hard to ensure our clients benefit from the compensation they deserve as a result of an accident, but we also work hard to deliver multi-faceted support, too.

We work with a range of specialist service providers who can help to provide brain injury survivors with the best possible care and rehabilitation necessary throughout their journey towards recovery. This can include the sourcing and provision of specialist support workers to provide assistance both at home and in the community. Not only can this service help towards the goal of independence, but also provides help and support for family and friends. As part of our service, we can also arrange for specialist Case Managers who help in the coordination of services necessary in the rehabilitation process; including health care, treatment and the provision of specialist aids and equipment. This can even extend to the sourcing and provision of specialist vehicles and accommodation.

David Burn, a Serious Injury Solicitor at Winns, is the branch secretary at Headway County Durham, a registered charity which was set up to help improve the lives of those who have suffered brain injuries in the County Durham area. Alongside the services that Winns offers to brain injury survivors, Headway can also provide support, rehabilitation and care to survivors and their families.

David said: “As shown in Louis Theroux’s documentary, brain injuries can affect every area of life, not only for the injured party, but for their loved ones too. Brain injury survivors require expert support, in order to ensure their changing needs are met through rehabilitation, and on-going support services. At Winn Solicitors, we specialise in not only achieving the highest level of compensation deserved, but in assisting clients and their loved ones in rebuilding their lives, through a range of specialist channels. Brain injury charities such as Headway also play a hugely important role in the support and rehabilitation of brain injury survivors.”
