Accident Hotspots Around the World
Recent research carried out by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) has suggested that the most dangerous stretch of road in Britain is part of the A285 between Chichester and Petworth, with the highest level of serious and fatal accidents in the country. In this article, we take a look at other accident hotspots across the globe.
Rodavia da Morte, Brazil
The BR-166, or Rodavia da Morte (Highway of Death) as it’s known by locals, is one of the longest roads in Brazil, and also has a very high number of accidents, due to the weather conditions in the region.
Jacksonville, Florida
Jacksonville’s population makes up only 5 per cent of the people in Florida, but accounts for about 12 per cent of train accidents involving motor vehicles, according to the Federal Railroad Association. This is thought to be at least partly due to the miles of train track which crisscross Jacksonville’s most populated areas.
India’s Railways
According to a high-level safety review committee, appointed by Indian Railways in 2012, almost 15,000 people die every year on India’s train tracks. Many of these deaths are as a result of derailment.
Commonwealth Avenue, Philippines
This road has up to 18 lanes at some points. Locals know the road as ‘Killer Highway’ due to the high number of accidents, which make up a significant proportion of the 6,941 road deaths in the Philippines each year. High traffic volumes, poor drainage which can lead to flooding, and a dangerous mix of tour buses, hundreds of motorbikes and pedestrians are all contributing factors.
North Yungas Road, Bolivia
Known as ‘Death Road’, and often named as the most dangerous highway in the word, North Yungas Road snakes up to a 15,400ft mountain summit. Only a single track at many points, 300 people a year fall to their death, dropping up to 2,300ft. Falling rocks, fogs, and large vehicles trying to pass each other all add to risk for road users.
