  • Expensive fuel deters motorists

Fuel prices keep drivers off motorway forecourts

UK motorists are almost unanimous in agreement that motorway fuel is too expensive, a survey has suggested.

A study by research group Viewsbank found that 98% of British motorists believe petrol and diesel at motorway service stations are too costly.

Meanwhile, 60% of drivers questioned said they never buy fuel at motorway service stations.

The study, which questioned 1,030 motorists, also found that 28% always ensure they have filled up before going on a motorway, while 5% leave the motorway to find cheaper fuel elsewhere.

Meanwhile, more than a quarter (27%) will only fill up their tank on the motorway if they are almost out of fuel.

The vast majority (84%) said the high price of petrol and diesel deterred them from buying anything else from motorway service stations.

Drivers questioned said they were most likely to use service stations for a toilet stop or to stretch their legs.

Meanwhile, more than 30% who stop will eat their own food as opposed to buying from service station shops or restaurants.

David Black of Viewsbank said: “Motorway service stations definitely provide an important service and millions of motorists use them but the research shows they are not winning many friends.

“Customers are convinced they are paying too much and only use them because they don’t have a choice.”
