Poo bus to hit the road

Forget about going green, public transport is set to go brown thanks to a bus powered by poo.

The so-called ‘poo bus’ is set to blaze a brown trail for alternative fuel when it goes into service on a 15-mile route around Bristol from the end of March.

The bus is the first of it’s kind in the UK and will refuel from a site in Avonmouth, Bristol, where sewage from 32,000 households is converted into biomethane gas. Inedible food will also go into the mix to power the poo bus.

The bus seats forty people, thankfully not on commodes, and will be operated by First West of England for four days a week on the companies Service 2 route between Cribbs Causeway and Stockwood.

First West of England managing director James Freeman said: "Since its original unveiling last year the Bio-Bus has generated worldwide attention and so it's our great privilege to bring it to the city, to operate - quite rightly - on Service 2.

"The Bio-Bus previously made an appearance running between Bath and Bristol Airport at the end of last year, but it's only actually been used once before in the centre of Bristol itself."

He went on: "The very fact that it's running in the city should help to open up a serious debate about how buses are best fuelled, and what is good for the environment.”

The First group has indicated that more poo buses could be taking to the road should the current route proves successful.
