Tyre Safety Month: Checking your Tyre Pressure
Checking your tyre pressure is an important part of ensuring your car is safe on the road. Under or over inflated tyres can pose a serious safety risk.
If your tyres are under-inflated, this may have an effect on the way your vehicle handles, and your grip on the road. Your vehicle may move erratically, and you might be more susceptible to aquaplaning.
It's worth considering the financial impact of underinflated tyres, too - your car engine will have to use more force to make them turn, which will cost you more in fuel. They are also likely to wear out more quickly too – which can be expensive in the long run.
In order to check your tyre pressure, you’ll need an accurate pressure gauge. You can buy one of these quite cheaply either online, or at your local motoring retailer. Do your research before buying, in order to ensure that the gauge you purchase offers an accurate reading.
The tyre pressure rating varies from vehicle to vehicle, so you’ll need to consult your manual to find out the recommended pressure for your make and model.
To check your tyre pressure, wait until your tyres are cool – do not attempt this after a long drive, as warm tyres can affect the reading. Remove the dust cap, and fix the gauge to the valve. Note down the result, and compare it to the suggested pressure in your manual.
If the tyre is under inflated, you can top it up at home, if you have a suitable air pump. Alternatively, you can visit your local petrol station – usually they offer the use of an air pump free or charge, or for a small fee. Overinflated tyres can also be adjusted at a petrol station air pump, or can be left to deflate slightly with the dust caps off. Once you’ve obtained the correct tyre pressure, make sure you put your dust caps back on.
As a guide, you should look to check your tyre pressure at least once a month. Additionally, if you’re driving long-distance, you should check your tyres before each trip.
