Why is Physiotherapy Important After a Car Accident?

After a road traffic accident, you may find that you suffer from whiplash, which is the result of the overstretching of soft tissues.

Symptoms of whiplash can develop over a few hours, and usually become worse in the days after the injury, and symptoms can include neck pain and stiffness, tenderness over the neck muscles, reduced and painful neck movements and headaches. Physiotherapy can help to reduce pain and improve strength, balance, mobility and overall fitness.

Early intervention after a whiplash injury can help to promote a prompt recovery. Physiotherapy can provide reassurance, advice and education on how to best manage symptoms. Research has shown that returning to normal activities can increase the speed of your recovery, and physiotherapists can advise you on the type of exercises and activities that you can do in order to ease pain and restore range of movement and strength of the neck.

In order to understand how best to assist you following your road traffic accident, physiotherapists carry out a comprehensive initial assessment on the first visit. They will ask detailed questions about your symptoms, how they are affecting your normal daily activities and work, the treatments you have received to date, and any relevant past medical history.

A physical assessment is also carried out, looking at posture, range of movement and strength. Additional testing of reflexes, sensation and balance may also be included. Assessment findings are thoroughly explained and physiotherapists will work in partnership with patients to devise a suitable treatment plan tailored to meet individual needs and goals for recovery.

Common treatment types include: education and advice, home exercise planning, soft tissue massage, joint mobilisations, taping techniques and acupuncture.

The treatment time for whiplash can vary, but on average, six sessions is generally sufficient in the majority of cases. Research shows that most people will recover from a whiplash injury, however a small percentage of people will continue to experience some symptoms in the long term. The exact timescales for recovery vary depending on individual factors and circumstances, but research suggests that the majority of people will recover within 3-6 months. Early diagnosis and physiotherapy can be very beneficial in reducing recovery time.
