1,752 Killed on UK Roads in 2019
There were 1,752 people killed on UK roads in 2019, a Department for Transport report has revealed.
This maintains a broadly flat trend since 2010, with the figures seeing a 2% drop in comparison to 2018, but nowhere near the substantial decreases between 2006 and 2010 which saw annual deaths on the road drop by over 1,000.
In relation to serious injuries, there were 25,945 reported traffic accidents – more information on these types of accidents can be found on our road traffic accident page - with this outcome, but there’s no reliable, comparable data due to police forces changing their reporting systems.
In total, there were 153,158 casualties resulting from reported road traffic accidents in 2019, 5% lower than the previous year and the lowest level since the Department for Transport began collating data in the current fashion when the figure was up at 334,513.
Which road user type was involved in the most fatalities in 2019?
Unsurprisingly, car occupants were involved in the most fatalities, with a 42% share of the total for 2019. That’s a 5% decrease in comparison to 2018. Pedestrians fared worse, with a 27% share and a rise of 3% on the previous year. There were 336 motorcyclists killed, a drop of 5% from 2018, while pedal cyclists accounted for 6% of the total.
Factors that affect road casualty numbers
The report stresses there is no single underlying factor that drives road casualties. Possible influences include:
- The distance people travel
- The mix of transport modes on UK roads
- Behaviour of drivers, riders and pedestrians
- The changing number of different groups (newly qualified or elderly drivers etc.) using the road
- Weather and its impact on road usage and condition.
What should you do if you have been involved in a road traffic accident?
The immediate impact of being involved in a road traffic accident can be unsettling, disturbing and disorientating.
It’s important to initially move, if possible, to a safe location away from the accident. Once this is achieved, contact the relevant emergency services, with the police required to secure the scene should it be on a public road.
The next step is to gather relevant details and information, which may help if you were the victim of a non-fault accident. These include; the name, address and insurance details of the at-fault driver, contact details for any witnesses, and the damage sustained by both vehicles. Pictures of the damage and the accident site will help your file handler to progress the claim quicker, as would an account of the accident site, the details of how the accident unfolded – road layout, weather conditions and actions of yourself and the at-fault driver - and the road conditions at the time.
