Best Selling Car of 2022 Revealed
Can you name the best-selling car of 2022? The answer might surprise you.
The results are in from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, with the Nissan Qashqai dominating the market with 42,704 vehicles sold during the last 12 calendar months, outselling the Vauxhall Corsa by just under 7,000.
Perhaps indicating a sign of the times, the increasing popularity of Teslas – the electric vehicle manufacturer – has seen the volume of units sold in their Tesla Model Y version hit 35,551 for 2022, just ahead of the Ford Puma.
That figure was boosted by a bumper December that saw the Tesla Model Y sell 10,664 vehicles, almost double their nearest competitor for the month, the Tesla Model 3.
December saw battery electric vehicles (BEV) claim their largest ever monthly market share with 32.9%. BEV registrations for the year hit 16.6%, making it the second most popular method of powering vehicles, surpassing diesel, after petrol.
Kim Royds, EV Director at British Gas, said: “Record numbers of EVs entering the roads is proof that drivers are continuing to unlock the benefits of making the switch to electric as we accelerate the UK’s journey towards net zero.
“To ensure that growth in the EV market is sustainable for the long term, we must look seriously at the country’s charging network and its capacity to keep up with increasing demand.”
The government’s EV Infrastructure Strategy forecast the UK would require between 300,000 and 720,000 charge-points by 2030. Meeting the lowest threshold needed 100 new chargers installed every day - currently, the rate is 23.
