Deaf Taxi Drivers Feel the Benefit of New App
Taxi drivers with hearing impairments are finding work easier than ever, thanks to a new update from app-based hailing company, Uber.
Uber’s signature app will be adapted to include more visual cues such as flashing lights to indicate new trip requests.
Drivers will also be able to receive in-app instructions from passengers in the form of messages, allowing for better communication.
The changes have been hailed as a welcome development to accommodate deaf drivers and making sure the taxi process is as easy as possible.
Deaf drivers have previously faced discriminated, with questions raised over their safety on the road. Studies however have shown that there is no causal link between deafness and accidents.
Howard Rosenblum, CEO of the National Association of the Deaf, said: “The use of texting in place of phone calls is critically helpful.
“Studies show that deaf drivers are just as safe, or even safer, than drivers who can hear.”
The app update has been rolled out across some states in America and Uber is already looking to trial it in other territories.
