Driverless Car Technology Gains Pace

Motoring manufacturers are continuing to push ahead to with ever-more impressive self-driving technology, despite large sections of the British public expressing concerns over the technology.

Whilst the big brands exhibited their latest cutting-edge breakthroughs in autonomy at Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show, a survey in the UK found that less than a third of drivers in most areas would consider using a self-driving car.

According to a survey by insurance company Rias, only 20% of drivers over 40 in Coventry and the Bristol, two of the areas earmarked to facilitate trials of autonomous cars alongside Greenwhich and Milton Keynes, would consider using a driverless car. In the North East that number fell to 15%.

There ere some positive figures however, with 43% of drivers in the East Midlands keen to try the new technology along with 32% of the UK’s drivers aged between 60-69.

Rias managing director Peter Corfield said: "We live in an ever-changing world and it is absolutely incredible to think that we could be driving around in driverless cars in the next few years.

"It's fantastic to see that older drivers are embracing this idea and are actually considering the prospect of using a driverless car if they are deemed safe."
