Driverless cars to take to the roads in 2015

The UK is set to become a global hub for driverless cars, with the first models set to appear on roads as early as next year.

Thanks to a £10Milllion funding boost, which was approved in the Autumn Statement, four English cities will be running formal, world trials of the new technologies that could see self-driving cars becoming a reality in the near future.

A long-time dream of of sci-fi fans and technology lovers, the driverless car is still unlikely to be mass-produced and sold for a few years yet, with safety concerns and changing attitudes towards controlling your own vehicle yet to be fully addressed.

The new scheme will see research and development ramped up, with safety testing and real-life scenario trials to be run within the four cities; Milton Keynes, Bristol, Coventry and Greenwich.

Innovate UK, which works to collate the existing range of driverless technology solutions, is managing the scheme. A low-carbon company, Innovate UK hopes collaboration will bring the technology closer to reality.
