Electric Charge Point Milestone Moment Expected
Under Government proposals, there’ll be more electric car charge points than traditional petrol pumps by the end of the decade.
The milestone moment is set to be achieved by 2030 but motoring groups insist the rollout isn’t fast enough to keep up with predicted demand.
Stating that the target “might sound impressive”, the RAC has insisted the charging point network won’t be able to cope with an ever-increasing demand.
The Department for Transport has said the aim is to have almost five times the current number of fuel pumps in the UK, as part of a £500m scheme to increase public charging stations and on-street charging for those without driveways.
This latest development is adding detail to the Government’s £1.6bn Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy that was previously announced. However, Edmund King, AA President, is calling for more.
He said: “As we advance quickly to the 2030 deadline for new zero-emission vehicles, it is vital that we get our charging infrastructure in order.
“While great progress has been made, there is still much to do to convince drivers on the number, and importantly reliability, of charge posts.
“To bring confidence and power to potential electric car drivers we need more, and more reliable and accessible charge points as soon as possible.”
A rapid roll-out has been underway for over a decade, with figures from 2011 to 2021 showing a jump in the UK from 1,500 charge points to more than 48,000.
But the Government is targeting 300,000 operational charge points by 2030.
