European drivers admit to bad driving habits

A new survey has shown that risky and dangerous driving is on the increase across Europe.

The annual IPSOS survey has shown that drivers across both the continent and the UK are persisting in driving over the speed limit, using mobile phones and not wearing seat belts.

When asked about the causes of accidents on the road, a majority of UK drivers believed that not paying attention was the main cause, with 59% blaming increased mobile phone usage behind the wheel.

Speeding and driving under the influence of either alcohol or drugs closely followed with 46%, whilst driving drowsy was blamed by 5%.

Mobile use proved to be a divisive issue, with UK motorists considering texting whilst driving to be a significantly greater risk than those who responded from other European countries (UK 42%, Netherlands 37%, France 36%, overall 29%).

The survey incorporated responses from Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the UK.
