Faulty Cameras Could See Thousands of Drivers Reprieved

Thousands of road users could see their speeding fines quashed after a fault was detected in cameras capturing the data.

National Highways Agency, the organisation managing the road infrastructure, found 2,650 wrongful speed camera activations due to delays between cameras and relevant variable speed signs.

This means a speed limit may have increased on the road, with variable signs saying 60mph, for example, but the cameras recording may still be thinking the limit is less.

Although only a 10 second delay, the anomaly has seen over 2,500 drivers caught out. The fault affected 154 of the 400 cameras across the motorway network.

Tens of thousands of drivers who had been given the option of a speed awareness course as punishment will see that cancelled as a precaution while the glitch in the system is investigated.

National Highways Chief Executive Nick Harris said: “Safety is our number one priority. All drivers should continue observing the posted speed limits as normal. Anyone who has been impacted with be contacted by the relevant police force.”
