MOT failures could be avoided with DIY
Millions of cars are failing their MOT thanks to small, easy to fix issues.
According to Warranty Direct, the failure rate for MOTs in the UK is currently 39.52%.
A lack of DIY maintenance on cars is being blamed for the huge figure, with 1.5 million cars failing due to non-serious faults or failures in easily replaceable items such as light bulbs, wiper blades and fluids.
Some of the most common causes of MOT failure include cracked number plates, damaged tyres and empty fluid tanks, all issues that Warranty Direct could easily be rectified at home before the test.
David Gerrans, managing director at Warranty Direct, said: “It never ceases to amaze us how many MOT failures could be avoided with the simplest of pre-test checks.
“Things such as making sure there are no cracks in your number plate, [that] your wheels and tyres are undamaged and ensuring there are no tears or holes in the windscreen wiper rubbers are all things the motorist can do at home, but if left to test day can be the cause of MOT failure.”
