A motorist is still driving on UK roads, despite amassing 68 points on their licence for numerous driving penalties.
Records provided by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, and reported on by thisismoney.co.uk, found six drivers on 51 points or more, with 39 having between 30 and 50 points on their respective licences.
Currently, if a driver reaches 12 points on their licence, they can be banned from driving. But there are cases where, if it is deemed the ban would cause exceptional hardship, the court may avoid banning a driver despite hitting that milestone.
The data, obtained through a Freedom of Information request, showed there were 8,237 drivers in England on or over the 12-point limit, with 6,837 of them men and 1,400 of them women.
Duncan McClure Fisher, founder and CEO of MotorEasy (the company who created this report), said; “While most drivers throughout their lifetime will be hit with some points on their licence, this normally acts as a warning.
“But these figures from the DVLA show that there is a worryingly larger number of motorists in the UK who, it seems, have made collecting points something of a hobby.
“To have 68 penalty points on your licence shows an incredible amount of disrespect, not only for the law of the land but for other road users, too.”
Greater London has the most drivers with more than 12 points, on 1,194, more than double that of the second most prevalent area of West Yorkshire, which had 556.
