Petrol Prices Surge to Add Pressure to Motorists

A surge in petrol prices is piling the financial pressure on motorists as the cost per litre hit £1.40 in places, the highest it has been in almost a decade.

The price is only just shy – by 2.5p – of the all-time high in April of 2012 when global oil prices soared sending prices at the pump sky-rocketing.

Figures released by the AA show the average price of unleaded petrol at 140.22p a litre, with diesel at 143.42p.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said; “Our data shows we haven’t seen the petrol price at this sort of level since September 2012, and we’re now worryingly close to the all-time average UK price high of 142.48p that we hit in the same year.

“At a time when households and businesses are facing spiralling prices in other areas this is a huge concern.

“We call on the Government to take action and do whatever it can to help ease the burden on drivers.”
