RAC Stats Highlight Motorcyclists as One of Most Vulnerable Road User Groups
Latest figures revealed by the RAC Foundation show motorcyclists remain one of the most vulnerable road user groups in the UK.
Fatalities from crashes on the road in 2017 have risen among motorcyclists by 9% from the previous year (to 349), with a fatality rate of 116.9 per billion passenger miles far exceeding any other road user type. Of the 18,042 motorcycle casualties in 2017, 30% involved riders aged between 17 and 24.
RAC Foudation director Steve Gooding pointed to each end of the spectrum as areas to focus on in terms of decreasing accident rates on the road.
“Much attention is rightly focused on death and injury amongst young road users but figures remind us that there are issues at each end of the age spectrum,” he said. “People over 60 accounted for 13% of motorcyclist fatalities and 46% of pedestrian fatalities in 2017. Keeping mobile is so important for maintaining the quality of life for older people, but these numbers suggest that we need to do more to enable older people to stay mobile safely.”
