Tips for Driving Abroad

Driving abroad can be daunting, especially if you’re in a country where you will be driving on the other side of the road.

While the principles of driving are generally the same across the globe, road rules and driving styles can vary considerably.

Firstly, if you are driving on the other side of the road to usual, you’ll need to spend some time familiarising yourself with the car you’ll be driving. You’ll be sitting on the other side of the car, with your controls, such as your stick, on your left rather than your right.

Ensure that you also do some research on the rules of the road, noting key differences such as rules for navigating roundabouts and giving way. Speed limits can vary significantly from country to country too, so ensure that you look up the general rules around speed limits, and keep your eyes peeled for signs that will alert you to any changes.

Getting your documents in order is also important – some countries have strict laws about having your driving licence and documents.

Check your route in advance, or use a sat nav, in order to ensure that you aren’t distracted by trying to navigate while at the wheel.

Keep your wits about you – be aware that you are not in your usual driving environment – stay switched on and be observant. There is specific advice from the Foreign Office around driving abroad – they advise that you ‘drive defensively when abroad and to expect the unexpected at all times.'
