Traffic Trouble Expected on Record Breaking Easter Weekend
Looking to get away for the Easter weekend? Expect record-high levels of traffic to greet you as the UK’s motorway system anticipates a surge.
It is expected that in excess of 21 million leisure journeys will be taken over the four-day time period as the traditional April getaway moves into full swing.
Good Friday is predicted to be the worst with over 4.5 million separate trips by car expected. The bank holiday Monday is anticipated to peak just below 4 million, according to analysis by the RAC and Inrix.
Despite surging petrol prices, an average rise of 12.6p per litre between February and March which is the largest jump on record, a desire to make the most of time off will see the traditional Easter traffic jams return with a vengeance.
Expected hotspots for traffic trouble include the M6 north between Liverpool and the Lake District, south towards Stoke, and the M25.
RAC traffic spokesperson Rod Dennis said: “After two years of relatively quiet Easter bank holidays on the roads, our research suggests a return to traffic levels that are much more typical of this time of year.
“It’s very possible this weekend could turn out to be one of the busiest for leisure journeys for many years.
“Add in the impact of disruption on the rail network and one of the biggest fixtures of the sporting calendar taking place this weekend, and you have all the ingredients needed for problems on the roads.
“Traffic volumes will likely be even higher if some warm spring sunshine makes an appearance.”
