Tyre Safety Month: Prolonging the Life of your Tyres

Replacing your tyres can be costly – so looking after them and preventing excessive wear and tear can pay off. Here are some top tips to help extend their life, saving yourself some cash and keeping both you and your passengers safe in the process.

Stick to main roads

Using motorways and other well-maintained roads will have a much lower impact on your tyres than badly maintained city centre roads. Your tyres will last longer doing a higher mileage on motorways than they will by doing lower miles on less even surfaces.

Check your tyre pressure regularly

If you keep your tyres at the optimal pressure, you will increase the life of your tyre. Underinflated tyres have uneven contact with the road, causing them to display uneven signs of wear. Overinflated tyres have a smaller patch of contact with the road, which can cause them to wear quickly around the centre of the tyre.

Reflect on your driving style

Erratic driving can have a negative impact on your tyres, as rapid acceleration and breaking can cause wear and tear. Driving on and off curbs, and over speed bumps can also cause damage to your tyres.

 Inspect your tyres

Check your tyre tread regularly to ensure that it is still within the legal limit, and also, to check for any items which may be lodged into the tread, as over time, they may cause wear, or even result in a slow puncture.

Rotate your tyres

Rotating your tyres every 6000 miles will help to ensure that your tyres wear evenly, resulting in a need to replace them less frequently.
