What You Need to Know About the New Speeding Fines
New speeding fines are coming into play, with the aim of reducing the number of serious speeding offences on British roads.
The new regulations mean that if you are found to be doing 51mph or more in a 30mph speed limit area, or 101mph or over on a motorway, your fine will start from 150 per cent of your weekly income. This a significant increase on the previous fine, which was around one hundred per cent.
In the most serious cases, drivers may be fined up to 175 per cent of their weekly income. The punishment for less severe speeding offences is not set to change at this time.
Currently, speeding drivers are responsible for around 244 deaths per year on British roads. It is hoped that these harsher penalties will go some way towards combatting this. The increased penalties are as a result of an on-going consultation between magistrates and criminal justice experts, as well as others with expertise and interest in this field.
The impact that these changes will make to speeding on Britain’s roads remains to be seen. How the punishments are implemented by the authorities, as well as how British drivers respond to these new fines, is yet to be seen.
