Will Your Next Car be an Electric Vehicle?
What needs to happen to make your next car purchase an electric vehicle?
A recent What Car survey found that 40% of respondents wanted to see more investment in the electric vehicle charging point network before they would take the plunge.
Just under a quarter (24%) were more likely to consider an electric vehicle as their next car.
This highlights a concern among motorists about the distance range of these types of vehicles and the accessibility, and availability, of charging points.
The Competitions and Market Authority has expressed a desire to boost consumer confidence. Chief Executive Andrea Coscelli, said in the Guardian; “Being able to easily stop off at a petrol station is a standard part of a journey and consumers must trust that electric charge points will provide a similarly straightforward service.”
There are more than 30,000 charging points across the UK, in over 11,000 locations, but this poll has suggested the current levels are not enough for the public to have faith in electric vehicles just yet.
More than half of those who took part in the survey disagreed with the Government’s decision to move the ban on sales of new petrol or diesel-powered cars forward by five years to 2030.
Nearly a third (30%) wanted better communication on what types of vehicles will be allowed on sale after the 2030 deadline.
However, the Government are keen to press ahead and announced in January a second doubling of investment in EV infrastructure to £10m. This will go towards installing an additional 3,600 roadside charging points.
