20% of drivers committing fraud
According to new research from GoCompare.com, nearly 20% of UK drivers between 17-19 are committing insurance fraud or driving without insurance.
16% of the youngsters admit to having a parents name on their car’s insurance as the main driver due to high costs. Another 3.5% admitted to driving without any insurance at all. This is illegal and can cost the driver, 6 points on their license, £300 and can even lead to the car being seized and destroyed.
Money worries seem to really affect young drivers with approximately 25% struggling to afford to run a car and 30% needing financial aid from their parents. GoCompare estimated that drivers aged 17-19 spend approximately 22% (£1,750) of their income on running a car and 16% estimated they pay more like £3000 on their car every year.
A third of young drivers believed that even though they don’t own a car, they would be covered using their friends or a family members car.
The AA found that uninsured drivers cost the insurance industry approximately £380 million every year.
