    50,000 Licenses Revoked

In 1995, a Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act was put into place which stated that any new driver who obtained six or more points within 2 years of passing their test, would have their license automatically revoked.

Shocking statistics from the DVLA have now revealed that nearly 50,000 new drivers have been banished from the roads due to this in just the last 4 years.

Although it was shown that 69% of those with revoked licenses were under 25, this issue is not an issue tagged solely to the young.
Of the 50,000, 1,608 were in their 40+, 294 were 50+ and 38 were 60+. Only 3 of the banned drivers were over 70.

The data also shows that men are four times more likely to gain six or more points on their license in the two years and only 21% of the banned drivers were female.

Not only are these reckless drivers losing the right to drive on the road, they are also incurring a tremendous cost. Insurance company Swiftcover had calculated that combined, the drivers would have had to pay an extra £6.5million for reapplying for a provisional license, retaking the driving theory test and retaking the practical test.
An interviewed student was interviewed concerning the knowledge of the 2 year/ 6 point rule and had this to say,

“I had no idea there were any different regulations for new drivers, and I also don’t know what would get me six points. I’d guess illegal drink driving, but for all I know anything could get me six points.”

In another interview, the Director of Policy for the Institute if Advanced Motorists was quoted saying, “We need a reminder campaign so that no new driver can claim ignorance of the law. Two strikes and you’re out is a very clear message but it does not seem to be getting through.”
