Government slashes theory test fee
Young people struggling to fund their way towards a driving licence have been handed a boost by the government.
Transport Minister Stephen Hammond has announced that the cost of the theory test will be slashed by 25% from October.
According to the Driving Standards Agency people spend £1333 on average learning to drive, taking the theory and practical tests, lessons and paying for a licence.
The fee reduction to the theory test will help to save learner drivers over £100m over the next nine years, the government estimates.
The cost of the car driving theory test will drop from £31 to £25 in October, and then by a further £2 in October 2015.
The price drop covers motorcycle theory tests, as well as car theory tests, says the government.
For young people on the journey to become fully licensed drivers, the changes are a welcome boost, especially amid high youth unemployment and the rising cost of living.
