Summer Reported as Being Higher Risk For Designated Drivers
A survey by the AA of more than 23,000 drivers has discovered that twice as many drivers are faced with the temptation to drink and drive during summer than in winter. It may be due to outdoor events or BBQs, but the findings suggest that many of us are faced with the desire to indulge in warmer months.
Those drivers aged under 24 are more likely to risk driving home after having had one too many, adding fuel to an already diminished reputation for young drivers in the UK.
The good news is that if faced with a drunk driver, 68% of people would confiscate keys in order to prevent a drink-driving offence. However, 2% of those surveyed admitted that they would do nothing and hope that the driver was alright.
AA president Edmund King is reported as saying: "We must continue to remind drivers about the dangers of drinking and driving. It is crucial that drivers and their friends and family consider the hazards of drinking and driving on all occasions throughout the summer”.
Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond continued: "Drink-driving is a menace and I want drivers to understand: if you get behind the wheel over the limit this summer, you will lose your licence, get a criminal record, and face a fine - you could even end up in jail.”
