Young & Distracted

The outcome of recent research by the Institute of Advanced Motorists has discovered that 1/10 drivers ‘switch off’ while driving and often cannot remember their journey.

A poll of 1,500 drivers found over half missed turnings because they had been distracted and 14% claim not to be able to recall their car journey.

The poll showed that drivers aged 18-25 were most likely to get distracted while those in the London area proven to be the most distracted with 1/5 saying they did not recall any part of their journey.

The chief executive of the Institute of Advanced Motorists was quoted saying, "It's all too easy to get behind the wheel and zone out completely. Being distracted enough that you miss a turning is a sign that driving is a task that has fallen too low in your brain's priorities."

The IAM are concerned that the number of distractions and pressures that arise during everyday life are causing us to push concentrating on driving to the bottom of the list.

This could be extremely dangerous as a driver who is not paying attention could cause harm to themselves or others on the road. The IAM suggest keeping your eyes moving while moving or opening a window to keep yourself alert.
