What Should I Include in My Will?
Producing a Will can feel like a long-term task, one for the future and not the present.
But an up to date, relevant, and valid Will is hugely important for secure financial planning which in turn provides you with peace of mind that all is taken care of should the worst happen.
In considering what to include make sure key elements are not missed. Make sure to include as much as you can to ensure your wishes are met in full after your passing.
What should I include?
When creating a thorough Will document, it should certainly include what you want to do with your assets, both financial and physical, and let’s not forget those digital assets too!
Consider money, property and belongings and ask yourself ‘who do you want to have these and how much of them?’ You can be as specific as you like, including items you hold near to you, who should be permitted access to your social media or even set out percentages of a financial sum that you want to go to various parties.
Gifts can be left to specific family members, friends or charities and businesses should you wish that to be the case. By stating it explicitly in your Will, those dealing with your estate should be in no doubt as to where you want these gifts to go.
You should also include who is going to be the executor of your estate. This is an important role as they will take on the responsibility, following your passing, of leading the distribution of your estate, often with the support of a solicitor.
Equally, there is the important consideration of the guardianship of children under the age of 18. Who would you want to look after them in the event of your death?
Don’t be put off creating a Will
Although creating a Will may seem like a morbid topic and one for when you are much older – 54% of UK adults are estimated not to have a Will - this could not be further from the truth.
By creating a Will now, you can provide assurance and peace of mind for the future and know that your estate will be handled exactly how you wish it to be following your passing.
